DOJO- The name means "Way Place". The way, or do, are the various martial
arts: Karatedo, Iaido, Judo, Kendo, Kyudo, etc. Our dojo is a place where our
students have a second home. Please take a short tour of the dojo.
This
is the "Shomen" or the traditional front of the dojo. It includes pictures of
karate teachers past and present as well as heirlooms of the dojo. Each class
begins with a bow of respect to the shomen. The class then bows to the
instructor and finally to each other.
This is the rear of the dojo.
It is a
place where you can see the certifications of the instructor, awards that the
dojo has received, pictures of students and different dojo activities. Also note
the "nafuda kake" above the certificates. This is the traditional name tag
board. Each student receives a small placard with their name on it .The placard
is then moved to a new location as the student progresses through the ranks.
This is
the kobudo/ buki kake, or weapons/ tools rack. Most of the arts taught at the
dojo are represented here on the rack including bo, tonfa, sai, eaku, kama, and
iaido. Students are permitted to train in kobudo once they receive their green
belt in karate or with the recommendation of the Sensei.

The "makiwara" are punching boards used in traditional Okinawan
Karate. The tools make student's punches, kicks, and blocks, rock-hard.
This is
the lobby. It was designed so that the students, parents, or those waiting
for the end of class can relax comfortably. The sounds of training barely make
it to this room and talking in this room does not make it into the dojo.
