Karate Do

Karate in a nutshell:

Karate, as we know it today, is the combination of techniques passed down through the generations through China, Okinawa, Japan, and the US. Karate has had many names in its history: Ti. Di, Todi, and Kempo/ Kenpo are names that anyone searching for information will come across. The different names are used depending on the variables involved...the country of development, the dialect of the instructor naming the art, political dates and places, and instructor preference. The important thing to remember is the art started in China, traveled through Okinawa, and from there spread throughout Japan and the world. During its development, it has had many names.

"To" means China. "Te", or "di",  means hand. Thus the term China Hand, which was a term of reverence the Okinawans used to describe the art studied in Okinawa. When "Todi" was introduced to the Japanese mainland, a political decision to use the term "Kara", meaning empty, instead of "To" (China) was made and the term Karate was born.

Included in traditional karate training is traditional weapon training, or Kobudo. Weapons studied include Bo, sai, tonfa, eku, and nunchaku.

All true martial arts are principle based. They are not governed by the latest trend or by those who think they have "discovered" the secrets to combat. Shin dojo teaches the principles of Karate as learned through in depth studies of the styles of Motobu ha Shito Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Motobu Ryu. Each style developed in different ways and the instructors of each style had different focuses. However, the PRINCIPLES that lie at the heart of each system of martial art parallel and compliment each other.

Sensei Rivers has studied under Masters of all of these styles. Sensei Rivers and Shin dojo are proud members of the International Seishinkai Karate Union (ISKU). Please visit the ISKU web-site at www.seishinkai.com
