SHIN DOJO JUJUTSU PROGRAM Chief Instructor: Robert M. Rivers, Sensei Jujutsu has its history in samurai unarmed combat. Shin Dojo's jujutsu program is directly influenced by this philosophy. In a world of jujutsu crazes such as Brazillian jujutsu and other arts influenced by mixed martial arts competition, we teach the principles and philosophies that modern jujutsu is rooted in. The classical jujutsu styles include Daito Ryu, Hakko Ryu, Hontai Yoshin Ryu, Takenouchi Ryu, and Araki Ryu among many others. The systems were formulated to defend oneself against unarmed assailants, armed assailants, and multiple assailants with a focus on strategy and tactics for dealing with the samurai. The curriculum taught at Shin Dojo is two fold: 1. Shin Dojo's base Jujutsu curriculum is a derivative of Kameshin Ryu Jujutsu. Kameshin Ryu was founded in the early 1970's based on the Shihan's (Instructor, Albert Church, Sensei to be specific) education in Hakko Ryu Jujutsu as taught by Soke Ryuho Okuyama (received sandan from Okuyama Soke). Shin Dojo simply teaches Jujutsu. The nomenclature of a "ryu ha" (style name) is not necessarily appropriate. The style is a "Gendai" (modern era) system and we do not claim to have reinvented the wheel. The basic Hakko Ryu principles are retained in the system, however, additional Jujutsu waza were added by Shihan Church as well as his successors. His successors, who Sensei Rivers has had the privilege of studying with, include Shihan Ken Burt and Shihan Ron Cherry (their art renamed Toraken Ryu Jujutsu). Sensei Rivers was a member of Dr. Cherry's AKKA (1980) for 14 years and served as the association's Vice President (Domestic and Foreign Relations) until his resignation in 2004. Sensei Rivers has not added to the curriculum, however, he has deducted from the system. Some of the base waza are done in a more classical method today based on his personal education in orthodox Hakko Ryu Jujutsu. 2. Additional training in the actual methods of Hakko Ryu are included in the training and are a requirement for the rank of Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt). Sensei Rivers has been training in Hakko Ryu under Menkyo Kaiden Sandaikichu (highest rank) Garner Train, Shihan since 2003. Sensei Rivers holds dan grades in Hakko Ryu from the Hakko Ryu Honbu in Omiya, Japan. Hakko Ryu was founded in 1941 by Ryuho Okuyama, Soke. He was a practitioner of many bujutsu including Daito Ryu AikiJujutsu. Sensei Rivers has been studying and teaching the same Jujutsu curriculum for 18 years. His Hakko Ryu study group was founded in 2003.
